Following behind the United States Navy Class (USNA) of 1973, the USNA Class of 1983 made their way through Gordon this past week on their bicycles.
The ‘83 group was a tad larger than the group that came through just 12 days previous but the American Legion Posts of Rushville and Gordon were just as welcoming once again.
The group launched from Chadron at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12 and made the quick trip to Rushville for a lunch provided by the Rushville American Legion.
Following the bite to eat, the pressed on down Highway 20 before settling for the evening in Gordon.
The group enjoyed the Taco Tuesday fixings on the Gordon American Legion before retiring for the evening.
The following morning, the Gordon Volunteer Fire Department escorted the riders out of town with sirens blaring.
When this group came through town, they were on day 21 of 44 on the trip across America.
The primary purpose of the ride across the country is raise funds to support fellow Veterans who need some extra help.
The group took off on their expedition on August 22 from Seattle, Wash. and will complete their ride on October 5 in Annapolis, M.D. This will be just in time for the 40th Reunion.
Their goal, according to their website, is to build class camaraderie for their 40th reunion this fall and give back to those who have given so much, get more fit, and make new friends while having a lot of fun along the way.
You can follow this group as they continue their journey to Maryland on their website, www.navy-cycling.com .
