Margaret Ruth Sparks of Rapid City, SD passed away at the age of 86 on the 11th of November 2021 at Avantara St. Cloud Nursing Home after a brave battle with dementia.
Margaret was born on the 5th of April in 1935 in Gordon, NE to Edith M. and Roy H. Rash. She grew up during the Great Depression. Margaret was very proud of her mother for becoming a school teacher and her fondness of windmills arose from her father’s occupation as a well digger. As she was growing up in Gordon, she liked playing the flute in the high school’s marching band.
She married Robert Nyffler in 1954 and had three children, Teresa, Roy and Tammy. They then divorced. She moved to Beach, ND and met the love of her life, Robert Sparks. They got married in Rapid City, SD in 1964 and started their life together. They loved driving through the Black Hills and occasionally taking the “scenic” route home. Margaret was deeply grieved by the loss of her loving husband, Bob, in 1992.
Her memories of growing up during the Depression inspired her work as an Expanded Foods and Nutrition Educator at South Dakota State University for 23 years.
Margaret loved the Lord with all her heart. She devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to her family members and to her mother, Edith. She had a love for all animals with a very special love for her cats. Margaret enjoyed cooking, reading, country music and watching the Hallmark Channel and the Golden Girls. She also had a special love for shopping, especially grocery shopping.
Margaret was a member at the First United Methodist Church and actively involved in the Ladies Circle. She also was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed many activities including dining and traveling with the other members.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, Teresa (Mike) Keller and Tammy Hubert, both of Rapid City; grandchildren: Tera Knopp, Daniel Nyffler, Mona Royalty, Amanda Keller, Elliott Keller, Elizabeth Williams, Stephanie Peirce, Mo Keller and Richard Keller.
Margaret’s heart broke when she lost her husband and love of her life, Robert Sparks in 1992 and her son, “My Boy Roy” Nyffler in 2011. Other losses include her parents, Roy H. Rash and Edith M. Rash.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Black Hills Humane Society.
