Law enforcement urges drivers to obey traffic laws for citizens’ safety

A recent uptick of illegal U-Turns in Gordon has raised concern for local law enforcement.

According to Gordon Police Chief Clay Heath, there has been an increase lately in drivers crossing the double lines on Main Street in Gordon in order to park on the opposite side of the street.

Most drivers complete this maneuverer apparently believing this is a legal action since the 100 and 200 blocks of Main Street are not posted with “No U-Turn” signs.

City law enforcement officials would like inform the public that this style of parking does not fall under the NRS 60-6,160 pertaining to a U-turn.

When a vehicle crosses over a double yellow line to park in a parking stall on the outside of the opposite lane, the driver is in violation of Driving Left of Center and violating a No Passing Zone. (A violation of NRS 60-6,131 section 2.)

Also, many drivers are backing out of their parking stalls to enter the opposite lane of travel thereby violating the same statutes when conducting this maneuver.

Both of the above mentioned actions are considered to be unsafe because it can lead to traffic concerns such as hindering the flow of traffic— sometimes for both lanes —when crossing over, or backing over, the double lines; improper parking that can cause hindrances for the neighboring vehicle, which can lead to accidental damage; and posing a greater risk for collisions with oncoming traffic not expecting a vehicle to be entering their lane.

“Complaints of these traffic violations have increased recently, and for the sake of the public safety, law enforcement officials are urging all drivers to be aware of, and follow, the statutes governing our city’s traffic laws,” said Police Chief Clay Heath.
