Vicious Vapes

Journalism Student Vaping first became prevalent when it was seen as a safe alternative to smoking tobacco.

Now it is commonly used among youth with their attractive flavors.

Common flavors of vape include watermelon, peach, and mango. These fruity flavors are especially favored by young people. However, those fruity flavors may just be packing a not so favorable punch in their side effects.

Although there is not a lot of research on vaping over long periods due to its newness, many health experts say that it is probable that the many different chemicals released into your lungs can be detrimental to your health.

The American Lung Association says, “E-cigarettes produce a number of dangerous chemicals including acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde. These aldehydes can cause lung disease, as well as cardiovascular (heart) disease.” Acrolein is a herbicide found in vapes that has been labeled as probably carcinogenic to humans. Meaning, they are likely to cause different types of cancer.

Nicotine, (the addictive chemical in vapes) can constrict blood vessels, reduce lung function, and increase heart rate when inhaled. The main problem with nicotine is that it is incredibly addictive.

When you vape, nicotine gets to your brain and releases dopamine. This interferes with your body’s natural production of dopamine, making it so you feel like you need nicotine to feel happy. This is what causes the addiction.

Another version of vape can contain marijuana. Getting high off of these marijuana vapes have been reported to cause even worse paranoia than regularly smoking the drug. It’s been found that marijuana use can cause reduced I.Q.’s by as much as eight points. Studies also show that marijuana can worsen coordination and lead to decreased athleticism. While under the influence of marijuana, driving ability can also be hindered. Drivers may swerve lanes and have delayed reactions.

This addiction could easily be a gateway to alcohol and drugs which can be even worse for your health.

Vaping is only growing in popularity in youth as time goes. Users are getting younger and younger. They need to know that the buzz is not worth the health risks.
