By Scott Bidroski The Hay Springs Hawks Girls Basketball team began the February portion of their 202324 season with a pair of games this past week.
The Hyannis Longhorns came to town on Friday, February 2 for a Senior Night showdown with the Hawks.
Hay Springs would run out to a strong start, amassing a 25-8 halftime lead.
Coach Ron Olson would utilize his bench depth in the second half, as the team would cruise to the 45-29 final score.
Sophomore Julia Russell led the team with 20 points and 18 rebounds.
Sophomore Mya Turman added in 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals as well.
Following the home win, the team took to the bus for a matchup with the Warriors from Bennett County on Saturday, February 3.
The Hawks would lead at halftime, 17-15, but the Warriors would score 26 points in the third quarter to pull ahead, 4130.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Hawks though, as they climbed their way back into the contest.
In the end though, they would fall just one point short to the Warriors, losing the contest 4948.
Turman led the offense with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Russell almost matched her teammate with 17 points and 12 rebounds of her own.
Senior Alexa Tonjes grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss as well.
With the 1-1 record over the past week, the Hawks now stand at 14-5 on the season.
They will have two more games this week, first welcoming in Crawford on February 8 and then traveling to Garden County on Saturday, February 9.
On Monday, February 12, the Hawks will begin Sub-District play. The times and opponents have yet to be released.
