Gordon Tree Board announces Commemorative Tree Program

The Commemorative Tree Program is a way for people to honor any person, group, or organization through placement of a tree within the City of Gordon Park System. The Program is under the supervision of the City of Gordon Public Works Department and the Gordon Tree Board.

Locations The trees will be planted in a location selected by the City and Tree Board and will be based on specific considerations including proximity to permanent structures, appropriate distance from overhead powerlines and underground utilities, lines of sight, future development plans, park usage, etc.

Species/Size Requirements The following trees are suggested for planting: Conifers, spring flowering, fall colors or shade trees considered hardy in zones three or four. A tree purchased for a memorial must be in a container with at least a one inch calipered trunk size. Balled or burlapped trees will not be considered. A small tree is any tree that reaches 20 feet or below at maturity; medium, any tree that reaches 20-40 feet tall; large tree, any tree that reaches more than 40 feet at maturity. The trees will be purchased at a reputable nursery in Nebraska or South Dakota.

Planting Trees will be planted from April through June or September through October. Planting trees is a process that requires specific knowledge of tree biology and may require specialized equipment. Therefore, Commemorative trees will be planted by City of Gordon staff and/or Tree Board members. If the participant[s] wishes to be part of the planting process, the Staff and/or Tree Board will determine the level of involvement and provide supervision.

Care and Maintenance The Public Works Department will care for the tree as any other tree in the park system. If the tree does not survive, the City will coordinate with the parties involved for a new location or replacement at the present location. The City will attempt to replace any tree, but cannot gurantee a replacement of the same species; any plaque attached to the original tree will be transferred to the new tree.

Cost Participation fee for the program is $300.00 per tree, which includes a plaque. The plaque will designate the name of person or group being honored.
