On February 18, the Gordon Theater hosted Aliyah American Horse’s “Open Mic Poetry Reading.” Participants of all ages recited original and favored poetry selections, and a poetry contest offered prizes for three place earners.
The three winners of the contest were: 1st - Leon White, 2nd - Ciara Carbajal, and 3rd David Morris.
American Horse has recently been named the 2024 Regional Youth Poet Laureate of the Midwest after serving a year’s term as Nebraska’s Youth State Poet. She is one of four finalists for the Urban Word NYC’s National Youth Poet Laureate title. She will be representing Nebraska at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in April.
In speaking to American Horse’s ability, Nebraska poet and Nebraska Writers Collective co-executive director Zedeka Poindexter says, “Keep an eye on this writer. She can affect the literary landscape of our state and our nation.”
