The 2026 Track and Field season is officially underway and the Gordon-Rushville Mustangs got their first taste of action this past Friday, March 27.
The group traveled to Scottsbluff High School to participate in the annual Binfield Invite.
A whole bevy of Mustangs got into the action to begin the season with many of them bringing home medals and personal best times and marks.
For the girls, junior Rarity Cournoyer led with a pair of first place finishes. Cournoyer took home gold in the 800 and 3200 meter runs.
Freshman Brittney Dehning also earned a gold medal with her first place finish in the 1600 meter race. She would also finish in third place in the 3200 meter race.
Senior Claire Wellnitz earned a third place finish in the High Jump with a mark of 4’2”.
Fellow senior Rowan Simonson also earned a third place finish in the Shot Put with a mark of 30’ 4.5”.
Freshman Grace Freeseman finished in fourth place in the 200 and fifth place in the Long Jump to start her high school career.
Junior Ashlyn Dehning earned a fourth place finish in the 1600 meter race and a fifth place finish in the 3200 meter event.
For the boys, sophomore Braylon Holston led the charge.
He took home gold in the Discus, heaving the large piece of metal 139’ 11” to earn the hardware.
He also did well in jumps, finishing in second place in the Triple Jump and third place in the Long Jump.
Sophomore Robert Moore had a strong day as well, placing fourth in the High Jump and 1600 meters.
Senior Elijah Ross earned a fourth place finish in the 800 meters and then a fifth place finish in the 400 meters with a strong time of 56.42.
The 4x800 relay team of Riley Lefler, Santos Jose Chich, Tristin Costello, and Elijah Ross finished in first place in the relay race with a time of 9:37.71.
Depending on the weather this upcoming week, the team is scheduled to go to Bayard on Thursday, April 2 for the second action of the season.
