By Scott Bidroski Week three of the football season was upon the Gordon-Rushville Mustangs as they welcomed in the Bayard Tigers for a 8-Man Western Trails Conference showdown.
The Tigers put their 2-1 record on the line against the 0-2 Mustangs on Friday, September 11.
In the first quarter under the lights, the Mustangs would strike first. Sophomore quarterback Khai Janssen popped the top off the Tiger defense finding senior Kannon Leeper for the 19 yard strike.
That gave G-R the 6-0 lead and that’s where things would stay until late in the third quarter.
Bayard would find the end zone then as quarterback Christopher Leonard completed the pass to Wyatt Edmunds for 23 yards. The two-point conversion was also good and that gave the visitors the lead, 8-6.
In the fourth quarter though, the Mustangs would have the final answer. During a long, sustained drive, senior Trevyn Younkin would break free.
The senior running back bounced through the Tiger defense to find paydirt on a 26 yard scamper. The two point conversion was also good, giving the Mustangs the final score and the 14-8 win.
The win over Bayard marked the first at the 8-man level for the program and pushed their record to 1-2.
The team will hit the road in week four as they face a familiar face in the Irish from North Platte St. Patrick’s. The two teams will square off on Friday, September 18.
