The Hay Springs Hawks Girls Basketball team took to their home floor for the opening round of the Class D2-12 Sub-District on Tuesday, February 13.
Their opponent would be the Hyannis Longhorns.
The two teams kept it even to begin the contest, with the Longhorns clinging to a 15-14 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Hawks would make their move, pushing ahead 26-18 entering the fourth quarter.
But the Longhorns found a way to get things back to even and when the final buzzer sounded, the game was tied at 31-31.
In the overtime, the Longhorns would squeak out one more point than the home team, sealing the win 37-36.
The loss would unfortunately mark the final game for the Hawks in the 2023-24 season.
When the final statistics were tallied for the season, sophomore Mya Turman would finish with a 14.2 PPG scoring average to lead the team. Turman would also collect 169 rebounds, 64 assists, and 64 steals.
Senior Gabby Twarling was right behind her teammate with 13.9 PPG. Twarling also added in 46 assists and 66 steals.
Sophomore Julia Russell averaged 8.7 PPG and pulled down a team high 252 rebounds.
She also led the team with 23 blocks.
Senior Alexa Tonjes averaged 3.2 PPG and grabbed 112 rebounds and 30 assists as well to round out the leaders in the statistical categories.
This marked the final time that three Hawks seniors would put on the jersey. Gabby Twarling, Alexa Tonjes, and Adriana Hafner all close the books as Hawks Basketball players.
Gabby Twarling finishes her career with 62 games played. She scored 691 points, 417 rebounds, 204 steals, 141 assists, and 64 blocks.
For her career, Tonjes played in a career 86 games. She tallied 215 points, 384 rebounds, 80 assists, and 63 steals.
The third and final senior on the team is Adrianna Hafner.
Hafner played in 27 career games, scored 6 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Looking to the future, many key pieces from this year’s team are set to return to the lineup.
The Hawks completed their 2023-24 season with a 14-8 overall record.
