By Scott Bidroski The season is winding down for the Hay Springs Boys Basketball team as they played a duo of games this past week.
They began their week by welcoming in the rival Crawford Rams on Thursday, February 8 for a match-up.
The two teams had split the previous two meetings this season so everyone in attendance knew they were going to be in for a treat.
The two teams kept things close in the first half with the Hawks taking a 28-23 lead into halftime.
But the halftime speech delivered from Head Coach Jason Badje lit the spark in the home team as the second half was a lopsided affair.
Hay Springs would outscore Crawford 39-16 in that second half to cruise to the 67-39 win.
Senior Gage Mintken led the offense with 27 points. He also swiped 4 steals on the defensive end as well.
Junior Dylan Young chipped in 13 points of his own and senior Jordyn Anderson pulled down a team high 8 rebounds.
Following the home victory, the team loaded the bus on Friday, February 9 to face off with a solid Garden County Eagle Basketball team in Oshkosh.
The Eagles made things tough for the Hawks offense and found a way to slip by for the win, 5349.
In the loss, junior Talan Smith led the scoring with 18 points.
Minkten backed him up with 10 points of his own.
Young pulled down 8 rebounds to lead the team to go along with his 4 points.
The team will look to regroup this week as they play their final regular season game against Potter-Dix at home on Friday, February 16.
Class D2-12 Sub-District brackets will come out this week as well and the Hawks will prepare for postseason play.
According to the NSAA website, Sub-Districts are slated to begin on Monday, February 18. Times and opponents will be announced during the week.
The Hawks record stands at 15-5 overall following the two games this past week.
