Johnson to continue her basketball career at Dakota Wesleyan

By Rylie Shultz, GRHS Journalism Student Haley Johnson, our small town basketball star who is averaging 16.1 pts, 4 assists, and 3.6 steals per game.

Haley has decided to pursue her next step in her basketball career by attending Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, South Dakota next fall. Johnson has always been in love with the sport of basketball.

From designing her bedroom to a basketball theme to putting in countless hours of work in the gym.

Haley has also traveled across the state of Nebraska to play on teams since the third grade. She is the definition of putting in the work to find results.

Haley leads the Mustangs to every win not only by scoring but keeping attitudes high and being the leader on and off the court.

Teammates McKinley Grover and Trinity Taylor had this to say about Haley: “Haley has always been a team leader for our team. She is very supportive over everything that happens. She is a team player and helps anyone she can at any given moment. We love playing with her and we are going to miss playing with her.”

Haley has lettered all four years of high school, being a big attribute to her team since freshman year.

“The reason I play is because I have always had a passion for the sport. Ever since I was in kindergarten at age six, I had found a love for basketball and that has just stuck with me throughout my years. I will miss playing with my high school team, but I am excited to see what my college career will bring to me,” said Johnson.

On Friday, December 29, in a tough game against Chase County, she scored her 1,000th point of her career. This made her the fifth Mustang in school history to surpass that mark in their career.

Johnson finished the season with a career point total of 1,214 points which ranks fourth alltime.

She is also a standout threesport letterman in volleyball and running track.

Johnson is also a member of the community trap-shooting team.
