By Scott Bidroski The Gordon-Rushville Mustang Volleyball team returned home for a trio of matches this past week as they continue their season.
The Mustangs came into the action at 0-4 and were looking for their first win of the season.
Up first was Western Trails Conference foe, Bayard. The two teams squared off on Friday, September 11.
This one was all Bayard though as the Tigers swept through the first three sets for the convincing win.
In the loss, sophomore Grace Freeseman led the offense with 5 kills and 2 aces.
Freshman Gracyn Younkin and junior Mikaylee Campbell chipped in 4 kills a piece.
The team got a good night’s rest at home and then returned to the gym for a Quad Invite on Sept. 12.
Hyannis was the first opponent of the day and the Mustangs got things rolling.
Straight sets, 25-21 and 25-22, tipped towards G-R to give them their first win of the season.
Junior Lexi Tausan led the offense with 4 kills. Freeseman had another strong outing with 3 kills, 2 aces, and 9 digs in the win.
With the win, the Mustangs advanced to face the Crawford Rams in the winner’s bracket.
This one was another sweep but in favor of the Rams, who have an impressive roster this season.
In the loss, Campbell tallied 4 kills.
Following the home matches, the Mustangs hit the road for a pair of matches in Mitchell on Tuesday, Sept. 15 against the host Tigers and Crawford. Results from those matches were not available at the time of print.
Coming up for the group is another Triangular on Sept. 17 at Cody-Kilgore against the host Cowgirls and the Ainsworth Bulldogs.
They will follow up that action with the Western Trails Conference Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 19. The matches will be played in Kimball.
The Mustangs stand at 1-5 on the season pending the results of the matches on Tuesday.
