Hawks Track & Field boasts loaded roster set for success in 2026

The Hay Springs Hawks Track and Field team have hit the ground running this spring as they prepare for the 2026 season.

Five student-athletes with state experience return to the roster for Head Coach Frankie Johnson as the group has their sights set on taking even more steps to be successful.

Leading this group will be seniors Mason Albrecht and Parker Wellnitz.

Wellnitz is the most decorated Hawk in the group, qualifying in the 3200 meter race all three seasons he has competed. He also has a qualification in the 1600 in 2024 as well.

Albrecht earned a trip to Omaha in 2024 in the 1600 and the 800 in 2025.

Juniors Alaina Raymer and Reese Varvel also return with state experience.

Varvel has qualified her first two years in the 100 meters and made it last year in the 200 as well.

Raymer did not qualify last season but did punch her tickets in 2024 in the Triple and Long Jump.

Sophomore Megan Anderson also returns after earning her trip to Omaha last season in the Triple Jump.

“We’re really fortunate to have five returning state qualifiers back,” said Coach Johnson.

“It gives us a strong foundation right away and these athletes set the tone for our program with their leadership both in how they work every day and how they bring others along with them,” she added.

There is also a group of athletes, both returners and newcomers, that will be pushing to make their mark as well this season.

Freshman Arian Mata is one to watch, according to Coach Johnson, as the newcomer had a very illustrious and recordbreaking career in Junior High Cross Country and Track.

Freshman Kinley Tausan is also one to watch for the Hawks as she begins her high school career.

“We’ve got a great group of student-athletes this season. What stands out right away is their energy and willingness to learn,” said Coach Johnson.

“They are coachable and they’re not afraid to compete which is exactly what you want early on,” she added.

The Hawks opened up their 2026 campaign with an indoor event on Saturday, March 21.

They will being the outdoor portion of their schedule this upcoming Friday in Sidney.
