Hay Springs senior Kya Binger added quite the feather to her cap this past week in a trio of wins for the Hawks.
In set one of the match against Bayard on Thursday, September 17, Binger picked up her 1,000th career dig as a Hawk.
Binger has played in a career 251 sets so far as a Hawk and has amassed some impressive career numbers, including 1,000 digs.
“I still remember when Kya came to the first summer open gym as a freshman and we scrimmaged and she stood right in there and tracked the ball all over the floor like a veteran,” said Head Coach Lisa Merritt.
“As a freshman she had 251 digs and she just got better from there,” she added.
The Hawks team was busy on the hardwood though leading up to the milestone match.
Hyannis and Cody-Kilgore stopped by Lister Sage on Tuesday, September 15 for a trio of matches.
The Hawks kept things perfect, sweeping both the Cowgirls and the Longhorns.
Junior Devyn Young led the offense on the day with 14 kills.
Binger tallied 14 digs, 6 kills, and 4 aces in a well rounded effort.
Senior Reese Varvel dished out 20 set assists and also collected 5 aces from the service line.
Junior Emily Forney picked up 10 kills as well during the two matches.
The team then turned their attention to the talented Bayard Tigers on Thursday, September 17.
The Tigers battled the Hawks tough in this one but Hay Springs found the answer each time, taking the match in straight sets.
As mentioned earlier, Binger was the toast of the match, tallying 8 total digs and surpassing the 1,000 career digs mark.
Binger also added in 4 aces to go with her milestone as well in the win.
Young was strong at the net, punishing 11 kills and also dealing out five aces from the service line.
The Hawks finished their week a perfect 3-0 and pushed their record to an impressive 10-3 overall.
They will play next at home this Thursday, September 24 against the Kimball Longhorns.
The following day, the Hawks will welcome in the Morrill Lions for a 4:00 p.m. showdown.
The match against Morrill is also Homecoming Week for the Hawks.
