The Gordon-Rushville Mustang Girls Basketball team took to the floor at Sidney High School for their first game of the 2023-24 postseason.
The opponent was a familiar foe; the Bridgeport Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs, of course, brought their impressive 22-0 record into the contest with G-R.
The two teams squared off in the Class C1-12 Sub-District bracket on Tuesday, February 13.
The Mustangs and Bulldogs traded blows in the first quarter, ending with a Bulldog lead at 13-9.
In the second quarter, the Mustangs would erase that deficit and take the lead, 16-15, halfway through that quarter.
The Bulldogs would awaken though, ending the quarter with a 9-0 run to lead 24-16 at the break.
That momentum would continue in a big way, as the Bulldogs would outpace the Mustangs 18-1 in the third quarter to grab the lead they would not relinquish.
Bridgeport would win by the final score of 63-29.
Senior McKinley Grover scored 8 points to lead the offense. Grover also had 8 rebounds.
Fellow seniors Haley Johnson and Skye Tausan added in 6 points a piece as well.
The team left the gym wondering if their season would continue following the loss.
As luck would have it, G-R carried enough points to secure the final wild card spot in state to continue their season.
The only catch; they would have to face the 24-0 Bridgeport Bulldogs once again for that coveted trip to the State Tournament on the line.
The two teams will face off at Bridgeport High School on Friday, February 23 at 6:00 p.m.
The winner will take their team to the State Tournament the following week.
