The first two games of the 2025-26 season are in the books for the Gordon-Rushville Girls Basketball team and they began their schedule with a split.
The first contest was a road test against the Hemingford Bobcats on Friday, December 5.
The Mustangs jumped out to a slim 23-20 halftime lead and saw that lead increase to 39-26 at the end of the third quarter.
A strong finish by the Bobcats threatened the Mustangs in the final quarter but G-R would find just enough to get the win, 4943.
Junior Rarity Cournoyer led the Mustangs with 15 points and 3 steals.
Senior Lindsay Simonson tied her teammate in scoring with 15 points of her own to go along with 6 rebounds.
JuniorAshley Dehning posted strong numbers in the win with 7 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Lexi Tausan chipped in 6 points of her own and 7 rebounds in the winning effort.
The team returned home the following day to open their home schedules against the Ainsworth Bulldogs on Saturday, December 6.
The Mustangs and Bulldogs started out slow only scoring a combined 22 points in the first half.
G-R would create a slight lead though after the third quarter, 28-26.
The visitors though would find that extra gear they needed to push ahead in the final quarter, putting away the Mustangs by the final score of 41-36.
In the loss, Cournoyer once again led the scoring with 11 points.
Simonson added in 9 points of her own and collected 6 rebounds.
Tausan added 6 points once again to go along with 5 rebounds.
Dehning collected 11 rebounds and chipped in 4 points of her own.
The team had one final game this past week on Tuesday, December 9 at Crawford.
The results from that contest were not available at the time of print.
The Mustangs will also travel to Chadron this Friday, December 12 before coming back home to host Hyannis on Tuesday, December 16.
G-R stands at 1-1 on the season pending the result of the Crawford contest.
