Hyannis slips by Hawks but bounce back against Bennett Co.

By Scott Bidroski A pair of contests awaited the Hay Springs Hawks boys basketball team as the calendar officially flipped into February.

The Hyannis Longhorns came to town on Friday, February 2 with their impressive 15-1 record in tow.

The two teams would square up for a high quality battle, keeping things tight throughout the four quarters.

In the end though, the visitors would have just a bit more that enabled them to push past the Hawks, 74-61.

In the highly entertaining contest, junior Dylan Young led the Hawks in scoring.

Young poured in 18 points and also collected 9 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Senior Gage Mintken tallied 16 points of his own as well.

Junior Talan Smith and freshman Tripp Buettner chipped in 10 points of their own in the loss.

No time was wasted by the time following the tough loss, as they loaded the bus for Bennett County, S.D. the following day.

The Warriors awaited the Hawks and were prepared to bring another fight.

This game was also tight all through the four quarters but the Hawks were able to hang on for the win, 68-66.

Young once again shined, scoring a team high 21 points in the win.

Once again, Mintken chipped in his 16 points and Smith added in 14 points and 9 rebounds of his own.

With the win over the Warriors, the Hawks improved their record to 14-4 overall.

They will now look to the week ahead in which they will face the Crawford Rams on Thursday, February 8 and then travel to Garden County on Friday, February 9.
